This lovely set includes the yearly Winter Exhibition of The Royal Academy of Arts. Most every year was an Exhibition of Works by The Old Masters, and frequently there was also an associated exhibition featuring the work of another, perhaps recently deceased artist. There are no illustrations in any of the 37 catalogues. The first year also included works by Charles Robert Leslie and Clarkson Stanfield; the 1874 exhibition featured works by the late Sir Edwin Landseer; 1875 featured Sir A.W. Callcott and D. Maclise; tome 1 includes artist indexes to the exhibitions from 1870 to 1889. The 1878 catalogue features works by painters of the Norwich School as well as engravings after works by Reynolds, Romney and Gainsborough; 1880 includes a special section of Holbein and His School; 1881 includes a special section on Drawings by John Flaxman; 1883 has a special selection from the works of John Linnell and Dante Gabriel Rossetti;1884 features a special section of works by Paul Falconer Poole; 1886 has special section devoted to both Joseph Wright (Of Derby) and Turner;s Water Colour drawings; 1887 again featured a section devoted to Water Colour Drawings by Turner; 1888 featured a section of Sculpture, Bronzes, Medals and Plaquettes from the Renaissance Period; 1889 had a selection of works by Frank Holl, as well as more Turner Water Colour Drawings; 1890 had a collection of Drawings and Models by Alfred Stevens; 1891 had a special exhibition of Water Colours illustrating the advance of this Medium in English Art; 1893 featured a section of Water Colout Drawings by William Blake, Edward Calvert, Samuel Palmer and Louisa, Marchioness of Waterford; 1894 featured sections of the works of Thomas Stothard, William Blake and John Pettie; 1895 was slightly different, with a special exhibition of the Sculptor-Goldsmith's art, chiefly from the 15th and 16th Centuries; 1896 again had a section on this topic, as well as Deceased French Artists; 1897 was devoted entirely to the work of Lord Leighton of Stretton, recently deceased; 1898 was devoted entirely to the works of the late Sir John Everett Millais; 1899 brought a blockbuster exhibition devoted solely to the works of Rembrandt. 1900 had a similar sole artist exhibition devoted to Van Dyck; 1901 was devoted exclusively to Works by British Artists Deceased since 1850; 1902 had a special section devoted to Claude; 1903 was devoted to works by Albert Cuyp and Some English Landscape Painters. It also had an entire gallery devoted to illustrating photographs and artifacts from the recent excavations at the Palace of Knossos at Crete by Mr. Arthur Evans in 1900, 1901 and 1902; 1904 had a special section on Sir Thomas Lawrence and also of Sculpture and Bronzes; 1905 was devoted exclusively to the works of the Late George Frederck Watts and Frederick Sandys, but included a section detailing the National Memorial to Queen Victoria designed by Thomas Brock; 1906 (the last catalogue in this set) had another special selection of Drawings and Sketches by Watts. A superb set.
