Item #22158

Text in French. Includes a concordance of the plates and a brief introductory text. Many of the notes handwritten at plate bottoms describe the actual colors on the plate image, as well as occasional other information. Paintings and initial letters adorning the First Bible of Charles le Chauve (Charles the Bald). It was probably composed in 845-846 in the scriptorium of the Saint-Martin Abbey in Tours, on the initiative of Vivien Tours, Count of the city and lay abbot of the abbey. The decorative initials and illuminated paintings likely were the work of 3 different artists/scribes. These beautiful illustrations, although in bw, show the degree of perfection attained by French painters and calligraphers in the Carolingian period. This volume is was printed by Berthaud Freres/Catala Freres but is undated. Information for Berthaud Freres (Berthaud Brothers) ends at 1908, and the date of take-over of the business by Catala Freres is unknown. Tte second Bible was published (by the same printers) in 1911, so this first volume had to be printed between 1908 and 1911.
