"Yarrott Benz was born in 1954 in Nashville, Tennessee. He received a B.S. degree from Vanderbilt University studying art history and poetry and received a M.F.A. degree in sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania. Benz's interest in photography was first stimulated at Vanderbilt. While studying Southern artists such as Eudora Welty, Walker Evans and William Christenberry, he received a grant to write and direct a short film. For fifteen years, Benz concentrated on sculpture, working and showing in Italy and the United States. In 1992, he returned to photography, heavily influenced by those intervening years. His current work draws upon the spatial and surface relationships of sculpture, the poetic use of image and metaphor, and elemental references from art history. He lives in New York and teaches photography, sculpture and art history at Friends Seminary in Manhattan."
