From the accumulations of Egyptian and Chinese tombs and royal treasures to our Louvre today, among other places, it took time for the museum to find its form and its function of preserving, studying, and exhibiting objects. Yet, a global history of museums—political, social, and cultural—has never been written. Here it is: *The Museum: A Global History*, in three volumes to be published over two years. The first volume of this monumental undertaking, *From Treasure to Museum*, begins in the distant past and leads to the creation of the institution called "museum," invented in Italy at the end of the 15th century and spreading throughout Europe in the 18th century. It is a history of gifts and merchandise, theft and plunder, wars and diplomacy. And also of architecture, ways of contemplating and handling objects, legal issues, and organization. A history of art, but also of commerce, knowledge, and technology. The second volume will deal with the European anchoring of museums, from the French Revolution to the 1850s, and the third, with the museum's conquest of the world, from the Industrial Revolution to the present day.
