"Since 1864 the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris has been a private repository for the finest examples of the Decorative Arts in France. The Museum's department of Papiers Peints is particularly rich in its holdings of early 19th century designs. When Brunschwig's Design Studio was faced with the challenge of choosing a collection, among such treasures we selected papers which span the hundred years between 1750 and 1850, a period of intense creativity in France which influenced design and taste in England, America and the world over. We were especially taken by a small album of papers by the printers Jacquemart & Bernard, successors to Reveillon, apparently made for their sales representatives. Unlike the magnificently complex scenics and elaborate Empire panels for which they are better known, these designs are printed in two colors only, chiefly grisailles. They have such a simple elegance that we included four of them in our collection. Each of the other patterns is unique, and each is reflective of the fashion of its day. From simple to opulent, conventionalized to naturalistic, these designs are truly representative of the French creative and technical genius."
