In addition to being a journalist, this man was the first student of Frederic Church, to whom he applied after being rebuffed by Durand. He gives an apt description of Church's painting ability and method, but thinks little of his art from a scholarly approach. Stillman also discusses his subsequent art instruction, both in America and in Europe. Scarce.
