"Of the many prominent immigrants who have enriched the cultural life of this country by original contributions this Swiss American sculptor J. Otto Schweizer ranks among the foremost. Locally recognized as early as 1910 in Philadelphia, the city of his residence, his reputation as creator of heroic statues, monuments, busts reliefs, plaques, etc., steadily increased till it reached nationwide dimesntions. Individual pieces of his public work have been frequently discussed in American and Swiss journals and newspapers, but little, if anything is known of his symbolical works which, because of their esoteric character, were revealed only to a small circle of friends. To rememedy this situation I resolved to write this book." - from Preface.
