"...Contemporary fashion has its own complex system of appearing in the world. There are the collections, the businesses, the stores, the advertisements, the magazines, the media coverage, etc. Even with all this, though, we, like many others, delt that something crucial was missing. As many people have observed, fashion has such a hold on our culture, and yet it still isn't really recognized as being a part of true culture ... While contemporary fashion has its occasional shows in museums and galleries and receives plenty of attention, like many individuals, both inside and outside fashion, we were frustrated that the discourse about contempoary fashion is usually so superficial. In our minds a cultural event that was deidicated to looking at the culture of fashion was long overdue, as was an event that engaged the subject of art and fashion, in a deeper was than is usually done. And we though that if this event could be established in a manner that nourished the ideas of creativity, exploration, experimentation, it would be a welcome opportunity for those involved, as well as for the public. Out of these seeds grew the first Biennale di Firenze." - from introduction.
