"The compiler of the present volume commenced the work for his own convenience, with no view to publication, but to supply in some measure the information demanded of him by those in this State interested in the art education of the people. The notes gathered from many foreign catalogues and from personal examination of museums in Europe soon became bulky and needed arrangement. It was suggested that in print they might prove useful to others, and help in the selection of casts for the various art museums now being founed in this country. The notes have been condensed, and a selection has been made, not always of the best, but of the most available, and many admirable sculptures will perhaps be missed. Few criticisms have been made on the art qualities of such as have been described, for the author had neither inclination nor ability to undertake the task, but his likes and dislikes have perhaps unintentionally appeared; for this he offers no apology. The measurements of the sculptures have been given where they could be obtained, both in the usual and the metric system, in order to indidcate more exactly the work described; but except in cases where personal measurement has been made in the Louvre, British Musuem, Egypt and a few other places, the numbers must be considered only approximate, as authors who give the measurements often omit or include the plinth withou specification..." -Prologue.
