The author was a member of the Council of Royal Asiatic and Royal Numismatic Societies. The first volume covers scupture, architecture, bronzes, carvings in wood, ivory, horn, etc, lacquer, and carvings in jade and other hard stones. The second volume covers pottery and porcelain, glass, enamels, jewellry, textiles, and pictorial art.
