Lists 145 works. The nucleus of this collection was looted from the Summer Palace by the British in 1860 when Pekin (Peking, Beijing) was captured by the British. They descended in the family of Sir Frederick Bruce, who accompanied his brother James, Eighth Earl of Elgin on the expedition to China that resulted in this capture. Their father was Thomas, Seventh Earl of Elgin, who was responsible for the acquisition of the ElginMarbles now in the British Museum. it seems the family had a nasty abit... The consignor added significantly to the collection during his stewardship. Many of these pieces ended up in museums. A very important catalogue, seldom offered for sale.
