SOmeone has handwritten "By John Quincy Adams" where an author name would usually be found. In the upper right corneris found the notation "From The Publis[her is trimmed off]. Item #156253
Ames, a Massachusetts Representative in the first four Congresses (1791--97), was an extreme Federalist, convinced that the Republic would come to ruin under Jeffersonian principles. On January 11, 1811, Adams father wrote the following relating to Ames: "...Fisher Ames, the highest of the High Federalists: "Ames was ingenious, had read a good deal, and was a fair Character and a good Man: but he owed his Rise, and was bouyed up by a British Faction and the Remnants and Shreds of old Toryism, as an Egg is borne upon the Surface of a Strong Lie. It was not in him ... a monarchical Mania but a Mania of fear and Ambition: Fear that we should be conquered and beheaded; and Ambition to obtain Wealth and Power by the favour of Great Britain ..." No copies found for sale in the last 30+ years. Pages 9-16 incorrectly numbered 1-8, apparently in all copies.
