Considers the life and work of English Romantic artist John Martin (1789-1854). "Having begun his career as a topographer, Martin turned to painting in his mid-twenties and almost immediately became successful, frequently exhibiting at the Royal Academy although he never became an Academician: some considered him too popular, others merely preposterous. While still at the peak of his fame, he turned his hand to engraving and produced remarkably fine and powerful mezzotint illustrations for Paradise Lost and the Bible. ... After his death his work fell out of fashion and into oblivion, and only in this century has it been revalued, equated with epic cinema, and restored to favour byt surrealists and students of Romanticism, horror stories, and science fiction. In this comprehensive study, William Feaver assesses Martin's achievements as a social reformer and as an artist of rare quality and imagination." (dj).
