Issued in conjunction with a 1993 exhibition. "Museum exhibitions are ephemeral events that are given extended life only by means of their written texts. Records tend to be scant for exhibitions mounted before the 1940s and relatively few of them, especially at universities, were accompanied by catalogues. It is all the more remarkable, therefore, that the Davison Art Center should possess intact the entire corpus of an exhibition of 1934, and that it should represent an historic moment in the careers of two preeminent figures: Henry-Russell Hitchcock, Jr. and Berenice Abbott. We have decided to reconstruct The Urban Vernacular of the Thirties, Forties, and Fifties: American Cities Before the Civil War as viewers saw it fifty-nine years ago (although the photographs mounted on their original boards are framed rather than tacked to the walls). By doing so, we are able to consider from new perspectives a collaboration that marked a significant moment in the construction of modernism." (p. 4) With essays by Carla Yanni and Janine A. Mileaf.
