Die Gemaldegalerie: Alte Meister (Kunsthistorische Sammlungen des Allerhochsten Kaiserhauses)
Wien: Kunsthistorische Museum, 1907. Second. Hardcover. Pale green, textured cloth with black lettering and imperial double eagle emblem of the Habsburg monarchy. 413 pp. with 200 illustrations. Very nice, tight copy but for age toning to end papers and some general soiling and scuffing to covers. NOTE: There are pencil notes in the margins and some underlining. They are, however, from the book's former owner, Ellis K. Waterhouse, a highly regarded English art historian. The notes likely would be a valuable addition for any reader. Item #151484
Text in German. With a foreword to the first edition of November 1896, by August Schaeffer, Wilhelm von Wartenegg, and Dr. Hermann Dollmayr; and a foreword to the second edition, December 1906, by August Schaeffer and Dr. Gustave Gluck. The edition for the Austro-Hungarian empire was printed in Vienna by Adolf Holzhausen, and the edition for the rest of the world (other lands) by Karl W. Hiersemann in Leipzig. The book itself covers 1,717 works by old masters in the Kunsthistorisches Collection of the Imperial Family. Included is a 19-page index of the names of all the artists included. Each work is annotated, and the signatures/marks of many of the artists are shown as well. The author of the actual catalogue, August Schaeffer, was an Austrian painter and later both a curator and then the director of the Kunsthistorisches Museum art section. Schaeffer also was known for his writings on the works in the various museums in which he worked.
