This classic work has been enhanced by full-color illustrations provided by English artist Tom Phillips (b. 1937). His "epic production of 139 prints as illustrations to Dante's Inferno took seven years to make and was published as a limited edition livre d'artiste. The New York Times proclaimed it 'by any standards an enormous adventure,' while the London Times said: 'only one verdict is possible -- that the artist has succeeded triumphantly.' Now this impressive work ... is available in a popular edition, faithfully reproduced under the artist's supervision. The complete text of Phillips's own translation of Dante's great masterpiece is accompanied by the full set of illustrations, which provide a dramatic visual commentary on the poet's journey through hell. The secondary text which occurs in most of the images acs as a lyrical counterpart to Dante's themes. For this edition the artist has provided detailed notes on the genesis of each picture and the nature of its relevance to his and Dante's preoccupations." (dj).
