Text in Russian with a one-page summary in English. "During World War I, by the decision of Tsar Nicholas II and his family, a 1000-bed surgeon hospital, intended only for enlisted men, was set up in the Winter Palace, the main Imperial residence. The hospital was opened in October 1915 and remained so until October 1917, taking up nearly the whole imperial residence. Other than the medical personnel who staffed the hospital, very few people knew of its existence, and only recently have documents and materials come to light, some from the Hermitage and many from former nurses. An exhibition on the subject, in 2006, was the impetus for people to to donate their items. This is a lovely catalogue about a little-known bit of Russian history.
