The Wrightsman Lecture Series, at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts, began in 1964 and continued for nearly a decade. It was funded through the generosity of Charles Bierer Wrightsman, a retired oil executive, art collector and philanthropist whose many gifts enriched the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In his lectures, Haskell suggests that changes in artistic taste may, in fact, be determined by external circumstances.
