In Portugese and English. Exhibition held 11 July to 10 of August, 2008, in Recife, Pernambuco. Brought to Colonial Brazil by Portuguese settlers, perhaps as early as the XVI century, cordel booklets were commonplace in the Iberian Peninsula. Their narratives explored a wide variety of topics, ranging from folklore, morality tales, and accounts of marvels, through to noteworthy events in daily life, such as the execution of a condemned man. This genre is demonstrating the immense capacity for renewal that permeates this world of words, music, imagination and the creative spirit, express through the woodcuts that have long illustrated the covers of cordel booklets. The exhibition traces cordel to its roots, exploring sub-genres and authors, and examining its techniques… --from the essay on p. 46.
