The collection of Migration Art in the Walters Art Gallery ranks second in this country, both for the quality and the number. From the introduction: "the art of the Barbarian is exclusively reserved for personal attire; it is dedicated to the ornamentation of weapons and such articles as the warrior and his wife could carry upon themselves to lend splendor to their own appearance. Essentially small and portable, since it is an embellishment of the armament and of the dress, according to the status of the wearer, it follows him into the tomb. Its funeral function underlines the magical function of that art which appears to be sheer decorations."
