From the introduction: "The main interest of these letters lies in their reflection of the psychological reaction of European conservatism towards the spread of constitutional liberalism. Throughout, Lord Aberdeen and Princess Lieven were fighting a rearguard action against the forces of change until at last they were overtaken by the revolutionary cataclysm of the year 1848. Those new forces were embodied in the person of Lord Palmerston, and it is his conduct, or misconduct, which more than any other subject pervades this correspondence."
