"The present 'Sampler' is not a catalog or checklist, but a limited selection intended to suggest the variety and potential interest of the collection. In each case the source is precisely identified, for these pictures were, after all, designed as illustrations to books, not as independent creation. In many cases the book's text has supplied a caption. The illustrations can of course be enjoyed for their own sake--an we hope they will be. Nevertheless, such pictorial documents, in the hand of an informed historian, should be seen and interpreted in the context of the accompanying textual evidence."
