The Army ration: how to diminish its weight and bulk, secure economy in its administration, avoid waste, and increase the comfort, efficiency, and mobility of troops

New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1864. 1864 edition. Softcover. Cream paper wraps with string tie and staples at spine area; 44 pp. with 2 bw figures and various tables and charts. VG with no tears or marks but with light foxing and some sunning to pages. Item #119954

This is the second edition - revised and corrected - but still an 1864 edition, not a recent reprint. Discusses the rations for marching units, specifically meat and bread. Includes very in-depth and educational scientific information about the composition of wheat flour (including gluten) in the day before it was over-processed; discusses cooking utensils, making bread without fire in the field, costs, amounts, etc. Very thorough and an excellent reference.
