"The first manufacturer of Gaudy Dutch in England was the Royal Worcester Pottery Works, located in Worcestershire. ... After the War of 1812, it was sent to the American market. The ware was well received in Pennsylvania. It appears that English designers and decorators of this brilliantly colored china were familiar with customs, religious beliefs, and traditions, especially those of the Pennsylvania Dutch." (p. 13) "Quality porcelain was expensive because of the meticulous craftsmanship and time-consuming efforts that went into making the biscuit ware and decorating it with fine coloring and real gold. The process was hastened for the masses, thus 'gaudy wares' came on the market. ... Lacking acceptance in their country of origin, the Gaudies were exported to Pennsylvania where Gaudy Dutch caught on with that sect, as Gaudy Welsh seemed to appeal to the Welsh faction.
