This display-quality set has held up very well over the years. Each volume contains lists of outlines of paintings, portraits of painters, and monograms and signatures, and a bibliography. The many thousands of entries for European and American artists and artworks are alphabetical with cross references. This edition contains an original etching in each volume. They are are (in order): Joan of Arc by Jules Bastien-Lepage (etched by Sidney L. Smith); Reading From Homer, by L. Alma-Tadema (etched by James D. Smillie); Diana's Hunting Party, by Hans Makart (etched by Sidney L. Smith); and An American Sunset, by George Inness (etched by Thomas Moran). All four etchings are quite fresh.
