Architectural Studies in Memory of Richard Krautheimer

Mainz: Verlag Philipp Von Zabern, 1996. Original. Hardcover. Maroon cloth/boards; gilt lettering; decorative end papers. vii + 185 pp. + 98 bw plates. VG contents; cloth lightly rubbed; bookplate of Paul/Gabriele Geier inside front cover. Item #154859

A special volume of 37 essay by different author-experts in architecture. Originally intended to be a festschrift in honor of Krautheimer's 100th birthday - always a hopeful but dicey undertaking!), this, as with others, became a bit of a memorial instead. Most of the essay are in English; 9 in German, and 3 in Italian. Some very intriguing and wide-ranging architectural topics. Paul Geier was with the US Embassy in Rome, where he and Gabriele became good friends with Bernard Berenson, owner of Villa I Tatti, which later became the Italian outpost of Harvard University's international center for research and scholarship in art history. The villa is renowned for its library, for which many of the funds were donated by the Geiers.
