Includes the very historically famous painting by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, "Nocturne in Black and Gold: the Falling Rocket," of the Cremone Gardens at night, with colored lanterns and dark masses of foliage, the blue-gray sky illuminated by two brilliant sprays of fireworks. In the famous Grosvenor Gallery Exhibition in 1877, organized in opposition to the Royal Academy, art critic John Ruskin selected this picture for a venomous attack in print, which resulted in an historic libel suit. Whistler prevailed but was awarded only one farthing in damages.
