An introduction by Carl Van Vechten. "During the summer of 1922 Ronald Firbank announced, to a startled world, that he was about to compose a study of West Indian life and manners, with which purpose in view he sailed, in August, for the Spanish Main. It was in the islands of British West India that the first sketches of Prancing Nigger came to be written and, in Bordighera, during the following winter, the book was completed. As a study of life and manners it stands unique."- DJ.
