Nine oversized volumes bound in 3/4 burgundy leather and burgundy cloth boards in varying condition. 5 raised bands on spines with gilt tooling and lettering, all edge gilt, marble end pages. Volume 1 has 98 plates. Volume 2 has 96 plates. Volume 3 has 98 plates. Volume 4 has 108 plates. Volume 5 has 99 plates. Volume 6, 99 plates. Volume 7, 102 plates. Volume 8, 69 plates. Volume 9, 71 plates. Each plate has a protective guard sheet for all volumes. Mounted mezzotint engravings after portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds, executed mainly by Samuel William Reynolds and by numerous other engravers.  . Good (shelfwear to boards, light foxing throughout mainly to perimeters of pages, where as, images are mostly unaffected, pages lightly age toned but plates are otherwise clean. All plates are present, Volume 5 has the front cover and spine attached but loose from text block, and rear cover present but off. Item #189040

Bookplate of former owner, Albert May Todd, "The Peppermint King of Kalamazoo", who was known among other things for his extensive collection of rare books, inside front covers (except for Volume 5, which has the bookplate of Newhouse Galleries from New York). Volume 1, Sacred and Fancy Subjects, and Unknown Portraits. Volume 2, Portraits "A" & "B". Volume 3, Portraits "C" to "E". Volume 4, Portraits "F" to "H". Volume 5, Portraits "I to M", Volume 6, Portraits "N" to "R" and Royal. Volume 7, Portraits "S" to "Y". Volume 8 has no subtitle but features works from plate 1 "Abington, Mrs. (as Roxalana) " to plate 69, "Johnson, The Infant". Volume 9 has no subtitle but features works from plate 1, "Keppel, Admiral Lord" to plate 71, "Young, Lady, With Dog". Volumes are not dated but according to WorldCat are circa 1860's. Complete sets of this rare set are non-existent in the marketplace, and only 1 is located in Worldcat (at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA.).
