"The present Checklist contains basic data on over 900 cabinetmakers, chairmakers and furniture - makers who worked in Vermont prior to 1855 ... The profiles are based primarily on information from vital records, the censuses of 1790-1860, the 1820 Census of Manufactures, the 1850 Industrial Census, business directories, town histories and advertisements from over fifty newspapers. An attempt was made to present for each craftsman the date and place of his birth, the town in which he lived, his occupation as given in the 1820, 1840 and 1850 Censuses, data from industrial census listings, citations in business directories and the types of fruniture which he offered as illustrated in over 300 direct quotations from newspaper advertisements." - quoted from the Preface.
