Auction catalogues corresponding to Sotheby's auctions from January 26th and 27th, 2006. "The Dealer's Eye is a new and unique intiative of Sotheby's and the internationl Old Master dealers. It is a collaboration of art dealers and auctioneers, friends and competitors. Private dealers have always used the auction houses as a source from which to procure artworks, but they also considered it a means to sell their stock through. In the latter case, it often concerned a less prestigious category of works and, sensibly, the immediate provenance of the works was not mentioned in the catalogue for sale. The art dealers have contributed well and take price in accompanying their consignments with their names. But there is more. Each of the paintings is impeccable, clean, and if necessary restored, beautifully varnished and framed. Moreover, Sotheby's has formed a team of independent connoisseurs, including a restorer, which has scrutinized the paintings, similar to the practice at great international art fairs ... The paintings in this auction cover a wide span of art history, ranging from the fourteenth century to the nineteenth. Furthermore, they represent various national schools. Statistically, the emphasis is on Italian painting and above all, on painting of the Dutch Golden Age." - from the introduction of The Dealer's Eye.
