Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad Route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, Part 12 Vol. 1

Washington, DC: War Department, 1857. Hardcover. Three-quarters black leather, black cloth. 306 pp + at least 77 handcolored lithographs (most of which are lightly to heavily dampstained). Good, wear to leather portions, weak hinges, significant interior dampstaining, bookplates. A reading copy only. Item #18180

This bound volume is made up of several important parts of the Railroad survey. It begins with The Report of Explorations from San Francisco Bay to Los Angeles, and is followed by "Report of Explorations from Pimas Villages to Rio Grande, central section thirty-second parallel route." It has 42 pages of text along with all 8 called for color lithographic illustrations, along with an extra plate mounted at the front titled "Mt. Baker & Cascade Range From Whitby's Island." lacks two called-for maps, and a called-for profile. The next section appears to be the first part of Volume 12 of this important set. It seems to be titled "Narrative of 1853" and has 18 chapters within 306 pages. It lacks 1 of the 70 called for plates, the missing one being the last one, #70, which is said to pertray Mt. Baker. I presume this is the same Mt. Baker plate that is mounted in the previous cection, since it is number LXX. It lacks the maps and profiles, and may be lacking the final 54 pages. Even with the plates dampstained and the exterior wear and occasional foxing, this volume is an extremely rare find! Complete, it is being sold as is, incomplete and with all faults.
