"It was natural that a great deal of Chinese art found its way to Japan. However, it is a little surprising that this art is, on the one hand, of such high quality, and on the other hand, so little known to the West. But the truth is that some of the finest Chinese art - sculpture, bronzes, and jades - has long resided in Japan and that much of it is unknown outside Japan. Many pieces, because they are in private colelctions, have never been shown publicly even within Japan. Professor Yuzo Sugimura, of the Tokyo National Museum, here presents a selected group of these Chinese masterpieces, and through them he examines three important genres of ancient Chinese art - tomb sculpture, Buddhist sculpture, and bronze vessels and jade carvings - in the light of recent archeological findings, Professor Burton Watson, of Kyoto University, has provided the English adaptation of Sugimura's text. The volume is divded into three major sections, each with text and illustrations. Every section includes several color reproductions and forty-eight gravure plates. The objects selected, the photography, and the printings - all are of the highest quality. The result is a handsome book that will be of use not only to scholars and connoiseurs but also to the layman interested in ancient Chinese art." - dust jacket description.
