"The following little treatise first appeared in Van Nostrand's Engineering Magazing, for which is twas written. The author hopes that he may be doing a service to American readers in introducing to them Dr. Scheffler's Theory of Arches, the fundamental principles of which are contained in the following pages, Vertical forces alone are considered. Numerous experiments are given in illustration of the theory of advanced, both for symmetrical arches as well as for unsymmetrical arches, or arches unsymmetrically loaded. It is believed that the following theory is easily acquired, is rapid in working and agrees with experiment, and therefore can properly be called "A Practical Theory of Voussoir Arches."- Preface.
