Written in French. The Batiks of Java. "One of the most marked features of the character of the inhabitants of Java, Javanese of the east, Sundanese of the west, Madouriens residing in the island of Madoura, it is their extreme coquetry. This clothing is almost the same for both sexes; the main piece is the sarong, a kind of dress that can be worn like a bag. Women throw a kind of scarf, called slendang, over their heads or over their shoulders, and in some parts of the island surround themselves with a belt known as kemben. Men wear a square piece of fabric as a hairstylist; this handkerchief is the object of much care on the part of the Javanese, who wrap it with art to make a turban or tie it elegantly like a handkerchief." -part of intro.
