Philadelphia: William Goddard in Market Street, 1768. Leather bound. Newly bound in 1/2 calf leather with five raised-bands and marbled boards. 452 pp. + some unpaginated Postscripts bound in (as well as the paginated Postscripts and EXTRAORDINARY issues bound in). Measures 9.6" wide, 11.8" tall and 1.8" deep. Delightful mastheads for each issue. VG with light to moderate foxing, minor blemished or chipping on few occasions. Two small holes in paper at top of pages 147/148. PP 230/231 minor rips at bottom, pp. 231/232 suffers minor text loss from a graded vertical crease with loss at the lower right edge. Item #175136

Begins with Issue 1, which covers the period January 25, 1768 to February 1, 1768 (whole issue 55). 6 pages per issue. After issue 4 (58), there is a postscript of 4 unnumbered pages. Another 8 pp. postscript after issue 6 (60). Another 8 pp. postscript follows issue 7 (61). a 4 pp. postscript follows issue 8 (62) and issue 9 (63). A postscript printed on 2 oversize vertical folding sheets after issues 11 (65), 12 (66), 13 (67), 14 (68). 8 pp. Postscript on smaller (9" x 6.5") after issue 16 (70). 4 pp. postscript following issue 31 (85) is paginated into the whole (pp. 249-252. Another 4 pp. paginated (285-288) postscript follows issue 35 (89). Another 4 pp. paginated (297-300) postscript follows issue 36 (90). Another 4 pp. paginated (309-312) postscript follows issue 36 (91). Following this postscript is an EXTRAORDINARY dated Wednesday October 12, 1768 that is also paginated (pp. 313-316). Issue 38 (92) begins at pp. 317. A 4 pp. Postscript for issue 39 (93) begins at p. 333, and an EXTRAORDINARY of 4 pp. begins at p. 337. Issue 40 (94) begins at p. 341. A 4 pp. paginated (pp. 357-360) postscript follows issue 41 (95). A 4 pp. paginated (pp. 369-372) postscript follows issue 42 (96). An unpaginated postscript printed on 2 oversize vertical folding sheets after issue 43 (97). Issue 44 (98) begins on p. 381. Issue 52 (106) ends on pp. 452, and has a duplicate title-page sheet to this volume bound into it. A total of 18 postscript and two EXTRAORDINARY issues interleaved with the 52 regular weekly issues. All indications are that this is as complete a copy of this volume as will be found, despite other paginations seen in the historical record, none of which is as meticulous as the current one offered. Several pieces have been attributed to Benjamin Franklin, including long letters from England concerning the Stamp Act on pages 32, 100-1, 313, 392-3, 397, and 440-1 (see Ford 608). Also includes the final three installments of John Dickinson's "Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania." Front page of each issue bears masthead of King's coat of arms. Joseph Galloway, a prominent Loyalist during the American Revolution, was a silent partner of Goddard's. Numerous letters to the editor and advertisements for real estate, bounties for runaway indentured servants, quack medicines, and spectacles, such as unusual animals, etc. (Waverly Galleries, other sources).
