Be-side(s) work em'kal eyongakpa, friends & traces 2014-2009

2014. Hardcover. Quad-spiral bound with wire. Stated edition of 99 copies, unknown pagination, somewhere near 100-120 pages, Unique. VG. Item #172360

Spiral-bound with wire on all four sides, with sections of the book attached to one spiral or another, never two spirals. From the Kadist Gallery website: Published in November 2014, The publication Be-side(s) works is an archive within an artwork. A world which covers parameters of coded-languages, rituals and mundane routines–unified in a world that is (un)known to our imaginations. The artist Em’kal Eyongakpa and curator Amal Alhaag invite the audience to experience three different world propositions offered within the domain of the publication Be-side(s) work. The evening interweaves themes of “referential politics”, creolization, ambiguous love, and imaginative ways of archiving art practices /thoughts in the digital age. But also explores how realities and multitudes of narratives offered within the artist publication challenge the notion of a single reading of art practices in an African or globalized context. How can sound generate and negotiate storytelling? In what ways can we rethink the archive to include other thought systems? Sticker on rear cover states an edition of 99 numbered copies of first edition, with another 33 extended editions of the books which are signed and have a code for an audio download. This copy shares none of these attributes, but these attributes may be part of the artwork itself, and not truthful i the way many people might percieve these statements.
