"The first book written on Pilkington's Royal Lancasterian Pottery was published in 1957 by Abraham Lomax, who was chemist at the works from 1896 to 1911. In the years which have elapsed since Lomax's book appeared, Lancastrian Pottery has become far better known and appreciated by collactors -- although it is still not a name which springs to mind when Art Nouveau pottery or late-Victorian lustre-ware are mentioned, in the way that William De Morgan's name does. It is right that Lomax's highly personal account -- the moving tribute of an 'old factory hand' to his brother craftsmen -- should now be supplemented by a cooler, more objective appraisal; and that is what Mr. Cross has achieved in this admirable book." (preface, Hillier) Includes chapters about the designers and artists and the identification marks. With a selected bibliography.
