Bingata (stenciled resist-dying) is one of the most iconic textile techniques native to the archipelago that today compreises Japan's Okinawa Prefecture. Brightly-colored and dynamic in design, the technique was perfected by artisans of the Ryukyu Kindgom (1429-1879) and embraced by the kingdom's aristocrats as a status symbol. With beautiful textile images, a map, information about the local history, flora, and fauna, and the people and culture of the Ryuku Kingdom. With each textile work annotated. Catalogue from the exhibition held at The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum from November 4, 2016 until January 30, 2017.
