Nos. 2/3 in the series Working Papers in the Traditional Arts, edited by Paula Ben-Amos. The series was a forum for the exchange of ideas about the traditional arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas and the folk arts of Europe and Asia. In the 19th century, prior to the colonization of the Congo by the Belgians, the Lega peoples had no centralized political system. They were governed by Bwami, a graded association open to all men and women in a given village. Bwami was both a political and an educational system by which esteemed Lega values were taught: moderation, nonviolence, solidarity, respect, constraint and moral as well as physical beauty. Ordinary Lega stools are tripods. This type of stool, with a round top and a base with four legs, is used at Bwami ceremonies only by a man who has reached the second-highest rank of Bwami or yananio. He keeps the stool the rest of his life, and it is then passed on to the next new initiate who is a relative. - africa.si.edu/collections / Akan art is an art form that originated among the Akan people of West Africa.
