Polemic (A Journal of Contemporary Ideas) was a student literary-art magazine of Adelbert College (now part of Case Western Reserve University). Found on Page 23 is an original woodcut (untitled and unsigned) by Roy Lichtenstein. It was pressed in black ink from wood block on Mulberry paper. This is one of two abstract wood engravings executed by Lichtenstein for Polemic: this one in 1957 and one for the a cover in 1959. Of the two, this 1957 work is by far the scarcer, but it is unsigned, whereas the 1959 engraving was signed. The other graphics for this issue are an original lithography for the cover by B.F. Ford, pulled by hand on Fabriano; a detail from a woodcut by Bruce Sharpe, reproduced by letterpress on Nideggan; a charcoal drawing by Julia Kertiss Tucker, transferred by lithography on Alphatone; and a textile design by Barbara Wood in balsa wood printed on Della Robbia. Additional sections of the periodical include Symposium, Articles, Fiction, and Poetry; with Rémy G. Saisselin, Robert Shaw, William E. Kennick, Francis R. Bliss, Leonard Dryansky, and others contributing. A very scarce, very good copy.
