Item #160998

The four seasonal volumes from the Riverside edition of writings penned by American author Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862). His Worcester friend and second literary inheritor, Harrison Gray Otis Blake, culled seasonal entries from Thoreau's journals and arranged them into four volumes. Blake was a bit liberal with the editing process; and so from a scholar's standpoint, these versions are less than desirable because they don't always quote Henry verbatim. They still offer wonderful observations about the natural world, however. The volumes include 19 natural scenes as captured by photographer Herbert W. Gleason, a copy of a young portrait of Thoreau, and a map of Concord. Not the prettiest jewels in the box, but just fine and dandy inside.
