(New York): Donaldson Brothers, 1879. Original Edition. Ephemera. Color-illustrated wraps, sewn. [16] with color and bw illustrations. No text pages, but each illustration has a caption. Good. Spine splitting but intact; foxing to pages and general shelf wear to covers. No tears or chips. Item #159022

A booklet given to children who visited the John Wanamaker department store in center city Philadelphia. A metamorphosis book. Each recto has an illustration with a flap at left which forms part of the illustration. As each flap is turned, its verso is revealed to expand and "magically change" the original illustration. The bw illustrations, meanwhile (on the verso of each full-page color illustration) tell the tale of the 3 Little Pigs. Quite fun and quite scarce! The John Wanamaker company is famously known for its pipe organ, built in 1904 for the St. Louis World's Fair and purchased by Mr. Wanamaker and then shipped to Philadelphia. In its present configuration, the Wanamaker Grand Court Organ has 28,604 pipes in 463 ranks and is the largest fully functioning pipe organ in the world. This magnificent instrument is played at least twice a day Monday through Saturday, and more frequently during the Christmas season.
