The Finnish photographer and video artist Santeri Tuori (born in 1970 Espoo) and an artist from an earlier generation Otto Dix (1891-1969) are connected by their interest in the portrait and in the personality and individuality of the model. The dialogue between Tuori’s video projections and the paintings of the famous German painter allows the comparison of the artistic realisation of the same subject using different and yet related, and above all, contemporary media – painting and video/photography. Dix had a clear and masterful understanding of how to select from diverse painting, graphic and printing techniques not only according to the medium, but also according to motif and to use them in a virtuoso manner in order to create a static “fixed” portrait of the person portrayed. Tuori, however, use the film-related element of “time” to create a moving portrait. His videos include a black and white photograph of the person portrayed; on top, a constantly changing colour image of the person is projected. Exhibition catalogue.
