The book represents a selection of some of the best and most representative examples of 18th to early 20th-century costume in the Department of History of Russian Culture at the Hermitage, St. Petersburg. This magnificent collection, which runs into the thousands, is one of the largest of its kind to be seen in world museums and was started soon after the October Revolution. The costumes had belonged to the aristocratic families in the palaces and villas around Petrograd, who had collected the pieces over time. Included are formal, ballroom, visiting, and home dresses, many of them masterly creations of Russian and foreigh tailors, dressmakers, seamstresses, embroiderers, and lacemakers. All of the costumes are from the wealthy families; none are of the colorful folk costumes or everyday wear of the peasantry or regions of Greater Russia outside the main cities. With an introductory essay, beautiful plates (with annotations at back), and a section listing/picturing information on fashion houses, their owners, and their labels.
