Phyllis Dearborn Massar ephemera

New York: 1944. Original. Ephemera. Two separate items: Single sheet invitation to a photographic exhibit, printed on both sides; and a postcard mailed May 23, 1944 to Dearborn announcing a different exhibit. Both VG. Item #157871

The single sheet is from a photographic exhibit, in which Dearborn had photographic work, held February 27 to March 3 at the Henry Street Settlement in Manhattan. The show was titled The Negro's Contribution to American Culture, History and Present-Day life and mounted by Lens Craft Studios, Inc. Some of the same works from this exhibition were shown later under a different name, The Negro in American Life (arranged by John Becker) at Art of this Century (Peggy Guggenheim's gallery) on 57th Street in NY from May 23 to June 3.. The postcard announces this exhibit and is addressed to Dearborn. This exhibition was attended by Eleanor Rooselvelt on June 3rd (the day before its closing), according to her diaries. Phyllis Dearborn Massar was a well-known and respected American photographer, curator, and author. She co-founded Dearborn-Massar, a mid 20th century American firm specializing in architectural photography, with her husband, Robert Massar.
