[This book] now shows, for the first time, how important English and Scottish architects and craftsmen were in the buildings of the Crimea. In 1798, Cameron's protege William Hastie was sent there to record in detail the beautiful sixteenth-century garden palace of Bakhchisaray with a view to its restoration. The work at first did not go well; but in 1824 it was taken in hand by the enigmatic architect Philip Elson, at the instance of County Michael Vorontsov, just appointed Governor of New Russia."
