Part of a lengthy series of illustrated picture atlases presenting the reproduction of prints rendered by European masters. Once based primarily on the compilations created by Austrian scholar and artist Johann Adam Bernhard Ritter von Bartsch (1757-1821) in his 21-volume "Le Peintre Graveur." This volume addresses the work of more than 40 printmakers. Bartsch knew only their initials or emblematic devices, but more than a dozen have since been identified. They should be placed among lists of French, Dutch, or Italian printmakers; but the decision was made to keep them in the order in which Bartsch addressed them. Uncommon.
