Royal purple silk cord bindings. Volume I: Sesshu Gashu - 3 pp. with text material; 8 color plates, tipped on; and 44 bw plates, some with tissue guards. All tissue guards have text material. Volume II: Sessu Gashu Zokushu - Title page and 2 content pages; 4 color plates, tipped on; and 41 b/w plates, some with tissue guards. All tissue guards have text material. Both volumes AEG. Each volume housed in cream board folio with white threads woven onto boards. White cloth title label with black Japanese calligraphy. Contents VG/NF; covers have a bit of age darkening/soiling and wear to edges. Bumps to corners. Bindings tight. One slide closure broken on Volume I; both on Volume II. Item #154584

All text in Japanese. The Japanese painter and Zen priest Toyo Sesshu (1420-1506) is generally regarded as Japan's greatest painter. His Zen-inspired paintings are credited with establishing a truly Japanese style of ink painting which had a great influence on all later Japanese painting. The paintings in these folios include landscaped, wildlife, monks, and other important aspects inspired by Zen Buddhism. Beautiful. Scarce with both volumes together.
