Text is in English, with a summary in French. "In the centre of the Republic of Mali, some 100 kilometres south of the bend of the River Niger, lies the high Cliff of Bandiagara. In this cliff are numerous shallow caves, used by the former inhabitants of the region as cemeteries. The region is now inhabited by the Dogon. According to oral tradition, their predecessors were the 'Tellem.' [This book] includes a detailed catalogue, depicting and describing ca. 500 textiles excavated in the Tellem burial caves by a multi-disciplinary Dutch research team, between 1964 and 1974. These unique textiles stem from the 11th to 18th century, a period of which scarcely anything about weaving and garments is known from Sub-saharan Africa. ... This research has been made available, and placed in the context of African archaeology and African textiles, to experts and all those who are interested in traditional weaving and garments."
